A sit down with Cyvok

A sit down with Cyvok
Cyvok takes some time out from his busy schedule to sit down with Daakkon and talk about his beginnings in EVE, things about the now and the future for himself, his corp and ascendant frontier...
Who is Celestial Horizon? What is their role within EVE?
Celestial Horizon is, in its most basic description, a Player Community. Our Aim is to make the EVE experience as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible for all our members
How did you discover EVE?
I was a big player in the now dead, Earth and Beyond. I had no interest in playing another fantasy based MMO, so when EnB shut down, word of EVE got around. It was plastered all over the EnB forums, I went and bought EVE on day 2 of release, the rest is history.
What makes you stick with EVE?
The people I play the game alongside, that and it is the only real in-depth Sci-Fi based MMO around.
What’s your personal opinion on the direction EVE is going?

I love it for the most part. The idea of being able to build a totally player controlled "Empire" is awesome. For a long time EVE seemed like it was becoming nothing more then another pointless shoot em up, however with the last couple of patches we have seen an ever increasing amount of content which directly gives the players the ability to come together as a team:
  • claim territory
  • that territory
  • and most of all improve that territory
Several MMO's have tried to put the story line in the hands of the players by giving them ability to build their own structures but none have, in my opinion, done such an amazing job as EVE. The ability for players to truly TAKE a chunk of space and put their name on it is awesome. Long term it is this player made content that will drive EVE to new heights. Fighting NPC's for resources and territory is all well and good; bragging about killing the most über NPC is great, but if you, as a player, can conquer another player or take another’s resources, those are some real bragging rights. EVE now gives its player base that ability. It’s truly dynamic!
Do you feel as if CCP is forgetting about the smaller scale players, such as pirates, bounty hunters, etc...?
In some ways yes, the problem is, in many ways the players themselves have forced CCP to ruin these play styles. I personally think Pirates, bounty hunters and even merc’s can add a lot to the game, however, you always get that group of players that decide they want to play that role, not as it was intended, but simply to grief other players, especially the newer players, when that happens as it has in EVE, you chase off potential customers or, as has happened in EVE, you force players to not venture out into the other 70% of the game that is "unsafe" because they are afraid of loosing all their stuff to these less mindful play styles. I would love to see Pirating, Bounty hunting and Merc's officially supported in the game, but balancing those styles against outright griefing, that’s the problem that every MMO seems to have, so the developers take the "safer" road and more or less make those play styles nearly impossible for the player base to use.
How was your experience at both EVE FanFests™?
For the most part they were both great. Iceland is an awesome county to visit. I had some issues with the latest FF; the CLS crew arrived in Iceland about 8 days early, learning from last year that only 3 days just is not enough time to party. Unfortunately, I got sick and spent most of the time in bed. The FF it self was awesome though. It’s always great to meet the faces behind the players. We had 19 CLS members at this years FF, which was quite cool also. My only regret was that I did not get to spend more time chatting with the players; hopefully next FF will be even better.

Oh yeah, CCP need to rent a more "classy" joint to hold the FF in this year. The warehouse, or whatever it is, that the last 2 have been in sucks.

What are your personal views on the PG rating the game has turned into from the once original 18+ rating?
This is another tricky area; one of the things I really liked about EVE from the beginning was that everyone was treated as "adult" members of the community; you could more or less say and do anything. Me personally, I don't take offence to practically anything. I am very tolerant of the views and opinions of others, unfortunately once again, it’s the players that ruined that aspect of EVE. A few abusive people decided to take advantage of how CCP approached the community aspect of the game and began to launch personal verbal attacks on the opinions, culture and styles of others. Anytime that happens the company has to, unfortunately, step in and take action. The goal being to create the best environment possible for the largest player base possible, that usually means creating a politically correct mess that totally kills the more unique and open personalities of the community. I have seen it happen to every MMO I have ever played, and it sucks.
I miss a lot of those more opinionated personalities.
For example in EVE I miss, Joshua Calvert, Daakkon, and Jade Constantine, they were always on the forums presenting their unique views. It really got a lot of players thinking about other aspects of the game. Unfortunately, in CCP's endeavor to make the game more palatable for everyone they have banned a lot of the most creative players. There are always some bad apples but the forum mods could really use some better guidance. Many do not seem to recognize the difference between an idiot and someone that just has a unique view on a subject.
How do you feel the politics of the game are now compared to the glorious politics back in beta/gemini/castor CA vs SA days?
In a lot of ways they are better, but also worse, if that makes any sense. In the old days we had several small well balanced organizations. This created some really interesting politics. We had some very dominant personalities leading a bunch of non dominant alliances; this led to some great conflicts and player driven content in game and on the forums. Somewhere along the way though things changed, a lot of players quit or moved on and "bandwagon warfare" kicked in. You couldn't have just 2 alliances fighting each other; it became about the bragging rights of destroying an entire alliance, so everyone would gang up on 1 organization and take them down. So today we have very few strong alliances left and a bunch of unbalanced groups all arguing over territory that none of them are strong enough to hold on their own. We have lost the strong personalities that used to be able to get many Corps together in a common goal, so today we have 1,000 small organizations all convinced they are better then everyone else. They refuse to work together so none of them actually achieve anything great anymore. That of course leads to the heart of your question; we all miss the "good old days".
ASCN is an alliance that likes to be the first to achieve big goals. Like the first outpost for example, are you guys striving to be the first with a titan?
Striving, yes, but it is not a top priority. The resources required to build a titan are, well, crazy. We are not in the best position to afford such a project because of our young "age" Unlike most of our "competing" alliances ASCN does not have a strong backing by well funded older organizations. G for instance has the industrial and monetary backing of TRUST that gives them the ability to easily afford the massive ISK price tag of the titan project. ASCN needs has no such backer, we need to build it on our own, mine the minerals on our own, and purchase the BPO's on our own. Combined with our other projects that places a HUGE amount of pressure on our players, pressure with other alliances do not have to deal with. It would be great to have the first titan, but realistically, I don't think it’s practical. We will have one and I am sure we will be one of the first, but I would be amazed if we were "The First".
If you could choose 1 corp/alliance to come back (all the people from back then in todays game) who would you choose?
That’s a hard one to answer, especially considering my position in today’s game. I would be forced to argue between Xetic and Curse. I would love to see Xetic come back just because it was such an underdog for so long and somehow managed to survive for so long. On the other hand Curse Alliance truly gave the rest of EVE a real enemy to fight. Not only that but a strong and powerful enemy as well, an enemy that could truly hold its own.
I am not sure I would want to "bring back" any one alliance over any other, but I would like to see a return to a balance between several large powerful alliances in 0.0 and a return to good combat, instead of the bandwagon warfare we seem to have today.
Without revealing too much, what are your plans with the future of CLS/ASCN?
I don’t think that’s a real secret. I would like to see ASCN become the first TRUE Player "Empire" built in Deep space. I don’t mean in terms of size or territory, but it would be nice to one day be able to compare ASCN's territory to say the Amarr. Tons of player controlled stations, star bases, players policing the territory, player controlled agents, player controlled missions etc.... It would be awesome to have a true player controlled and run empire. In my opinion that would be just a whole lot of fun for everyone involved. A story line controlled and shaped by the players instead of preset NPC crap. I don't want to go get the Amarr emperor’s stupid stranded daughter from some NPC complex, I want a mission to get buddrow’s corpse from the heart of IRON territory for example.
To all the EVE players/EVEnews readers, what is your message to them?
In the great words of Bill and Ted: Party On
